University of Manchester researchers showed that graphene-based membranes are impermeable to all gases and liquids (vacuum-tight) with an exception of water which evaporates through them as quickly as if the membranes were not there at all.
Graphene is lauded as a potential wander material with possible applications in mobile phones, lighting panels and the aircraft design. Its one of the best conductors of electricity and heat.

University of Manchester scientists used derivative of graphene -graphene oxide seal and found that when a metal container was sealed with such a film, even the most sensitive equipment was unable to detect air or any other gas, including helium, to leak through.
When the researchers tried the same with ordinary water, they found that it evaporates without noticing the graphene seal. Water molecules diffused through the graphene-oxide membranes with such a great speed that the evaporation rate was the same independently whether the container was sealed or completely open, thus making it a perfect filter for the water.

Professor Sir Andre Geim said in the article: ’The properties are so unusual that it is hard to imagine that they cannot find some use in the design of filtration, separation or barrier membranes and for selective removal of water’.

This working document provides an overview of some basic facts and societal challenges related to water. It has been developed by the WBCSD secretariat and is intended to support the ongoing dialogue within the WBCSD membership and with other stakeholders in civil society and government. The emphasis in this initial document is on water availability and people’s use of water for agricultural, industrial and domestic purposes. The scenario planning process will provide opportunities to supplement this work with consideration of other key issues.
